The House is on The Market

It didn’t take very long for us to come to the decision to put the house on the market and today it listed.

The decision to sell the house was actually much easier than we thought it would be. Our choices were:

  1. Sell the house
  2. Rent the house
  3. Get a house sitter

Given we both want to travel to remote locations, the chances are that we will be uncontactable for long periods of time. This means that if anything was to go wrong with anything in the house, such as a hot water system failing, it would be very difficult for the real-estate agents to contact us and get permission for repairs, all the while the tenants are having cold showers. This is something we didn’t want to worry about. There’s also the complication of having tenants who, shall we say, don’t appreciate the home as much as we did. The last thing we wanted was to come back after our trip to find the house in a state of disrepair. Not only would that be heartbreaking, but the expense of restoring everything to its original condition could be high.

Franky, the whole idea of this trip is to relax and not worry about anything and that includes the house. We both realised it would be so much less stress to just sell the house so its not on our minds while we’re away.

Now, that’s not necessarily the end of the story. Yes the house is on the market but, we do not want to dive it away just for the sake of clearing our minds. There are financial considerations to make. We know we will need a certain amount of money put aside for the trip and the rest will be needed to buy another home if and when we decide to resettle. We don’t want to leave ourselves short on that count as the thought of taking out a big mortgage in our later years is not all that exciting. So we have set ourselves a minimum of what we will accept for the house. If we cannot get that amount of above, we will not sell and opt for either option 2 or 3.

So now we will see what happens. We have a lot of confidence in our real estate agents and they have given us sufficient level of comfort that we will make our reserve and perhaps more which would be absolutely awesome. The preparations we’ve done have made the house look stunning. The next few weeks are going to be very exciting.
